The Wine Thief has a storied and noteworthy history with Spanish wine.  With their variety and value, these wines have held a special place in our hearts across the years.  From the nervy white treble of Galicia and the Basque country, to the red warmth of Navarra and Ribera del Duero, with Priorat and Montsant adding the bass notes of earth and deep fruit. Not to mention the magical wines of Rioja, where the tone, spice and classic mélange of aromatics and flavors make beautiful music together like Segovia and guitar.

One of our longest standing and favorite suppliers of Spanish wines, Classic Wines, was able to set aside for us a few cases of 2009Ondarre Rioja Reserva, a premier wine from Bodegas Olarra. Though we received far less than we’d hoped for, now is not the time for lament – on the contrary, it is the perfect time to enjoy this well-cellared example of Rioja’s magic.

A quartet of 90% Tempranillo, 5% Garnacha, 5% Mazuelo and Graciano, aged for sixteen months in American and French oaks.  Rich, round, with notes of dark cherry, saddle leather, cedar and finishing vanilla. Full of spice, with a zest of harmonic warmth from bottle age, it is perfectly mature Rioja!

The 2009 Ondarre Reserva is a steal among steals, and you can buy it for a song, but the song will end abruptly when this wine is sold out. ¡Salud!
